Training Philosophy and Framework

Our Core Mantra: Coach → Learn → Adapt

At the heart of everything we do lies a simple but powerful principle: Coach → Learn → Adapt. This means I begin by coaching you to understand both your capabilities and our training approach. Through this process, we learn about each other - I discover your individual traits, motivations, and responses, while you learn about the training philosophy and methods. This mutual learning then allows us to adapt our approach, creating a truly collaborative partnership focused on your competition goals.

The Three-Pillar Hypothesis

Our training foundation rests on three comprehensive pillars: Strength, Endurance, and Stamina. These pillars are presented as a working hypothesis rather than rigid doctrine, providing a flexible framework that can be adapted to individual needs and circumstances.

Strength

The Strength pillar encompasses all aspects of physical power, structural integrity, and movement competency. This includes the fundamental movement patterns, compound exercises, strength endurance work, and the systematic development of your body's ability to generate and sustain force across multiple planes of movement.

Endurance

The Endurance pillar focuses on your ability to sustain effort over extended periods, with particular emphasis on the psychological and mental components of performance. This pillar addresses mental resilience, pacing discipline, focus maintenance over ultra distances, and the development of psychological strategies for managing fatigue and maintaining performance when physical systems are challenged.

Stamina

The Stamina pillar is centred on your physiological energy systems and the body's capacity to resist fatigue. This encompasses metabolic efficiency, recovery systems, cardiovascular adaptation, and the fundamental biological processes that fuel sustained performance.

Intelligent Flexibility: Programs as Guides, Not Bibles

Our philosophy recognizes that programs are guides, not bibles. While we maintain clear structural frameworks and evidence-based training principles, we understand that individual adaptation requires flexibility. This "intelligent flexibility" means that training parameters can be adjusted based on your life circumstances, stress levels, recovery capacity, and individual response patterns.

The framework allows for individual interpretation and emphasis. Rather than rigid percentages, we recognize that different athletes may require different ratios of focus across the three pillars. Some athletes thrive with higher training volumes to maintain positive psychological states, while others prefer meeting specific targets with more focused, lower-volume approaches. Both paths can lead to the same successful outcomes when properly managed.

THE UH APPROACH

Periodization with Adaptation

Our approach employs structured periodization that builds in adaptive flexibility from the outset. Training blocks focus on specific pillars while maintaining supporting work in the other areas. As we progress toward competition, emphasis shifts appropriately, but always with room for individual adjustment based on your response and circumstances.

This might mean adjusting intensity ranges rather than fixed repetitions, modifying session structure based on life stress, or adapting recovery protocols to match your individual needs. The key is maintaining forward progress while respecting your individual physiology and psychology.

YOU THE ATHLETE!

The Individual at the Centre

Ultimately, our framework recognizes that you are an individual with unique traits, responses, and circumstances. While the three-pillar structure provides comprehensive coverage of training demands, the application remains highly personalized. We understand that factors outside of training significantly impact performance, and our approach accounts for these realities rather than ignoring them.

The goal is not to force you into a predetermined training template, but to use our structured framework as a foundation for developing an approach that maximizes your potential while respecting your individual circumstances and needs.
